Energy Audits Can Save Money, Are Popular During Cold Snap

Bookmark and Share

The temperatures are falling, which means your heating bill will continue to rise.

CenterPoint Energy says there's a spike in the number of people seeking energy audits, it did nearly 600 last month. Essentially, a crew comes out to your house and uses special equipment to find heat escaping through nooks and crannies you never even knew about.

"If you follow the auditor's recommendations, a more comfortable home, lower utility bills, and increased durability of your equipment," said Ryan Setterholm of CenterPoint Energy. "The purpose of an energy audit is to find out what opportunities there are for a homeowner to make improvements, to make their home more energy efficient. We also check things like safety, equipment lifespan."

If you're thinking about an audit for your home, the basic inspection costs $25, the more detailed ones cost $100. Energy savings depend on your home, but the average is around $40 a month if you follow recommendations.
