There will soon be more space for athletes in the east metro.
The Woodbury City Council approved a $21.8 million expansion of the Bielenberg Sports Center at its meeting Wednesday night.
According to Woodbury Mayor Mary Giuliani Stephens, the city council unanimously approved the project, with construction bids coming in by early March.
The center currently has two indoor ice rinks, an indoor-domed field house, 18 softball/baseball fields and 18 multipurpose fields. It also has a 'Miracle Field' which accommodates people with disabilities.
The project will double the size of the field house while expanding the athletic complex.
A plan for the expansion has been in the works since 2010.
Giuliani Stephens tells KSTP the complex is self-sustaining so it pays for itself.
The expansion is expected to be completed by the spring of 2014.
