Suit to End Same-Day Voter Registration Dismissed

Bookmark and Share

Election-day voter registration will continue in Minnesota this year after a federal judge rejected a lawsuit that sought to end it.

Minnesota Public Radio reported Friday that federal Judge Donovan Frank dismissed the challenge to same-day registration from two conservative groups and seven individuals, who contended that ineligible voters cast ballots in 2008 and 2010.

Frank's ruling found that no federal laws were broken and the groups failed to unearth misconduct or fully pursue their case in state courts.

Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, a Democrat, and other Democratic-leaning groups praised the decision.

The ruling doesn't affect legal challenges to a constitutional amendment that would require voters to present photo identification to vote, and Ritchie's rewrite of the ballot question on the amendment.
