Lawmakers Consider Changes to No Fault Auto Insurance Law

No fault insurance allows auto accident victims up to $20,000 in medical benefits regardless of fault. The insurance benefits often provide accident victims with much needed care to which they might otherwise not have access.

The majority of those involved with a no fault claim: attorneys, insurance companies, and attorneys behave ethically and appropriately.

However, organized criminals and others are exploiting the state's no fault insurance law by committing fraud in search of financial gain. Analysts estimate the fraud drive up insurance premiums by approximately $100 a year per driver in Minnesota.

It's one reason why several bills are being heard at the Capitol. The bills aim to reduce fraud or otherwise aid people injured in automobile crashes.

However, attorneys, insurance companies, and medical providers do not all agree exactly how to fix the problem. It's why the bills do not enjoy unanimous support and are attracting opposition.
